Jairo Kenupp Bastos is Full Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo (FCFRP-USP). He earned a B.S. in Pharmacy from Universidade Federal Fluminense in 1984, a master’s degree in Organic Chemistry of Natural Products from the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo in 1987, and a Ph.D. in the same field from the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo in 1991. He completed postdoctoral training at the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi, USA, under the supervision of Dr. James D. McChesney.
Bastos’s research centers on the chemistry of natural products, with a focus on pharmacognosy and the bioprospection of Brazilian medicinal plants and propolis for pharmaceutical applications. His work emphasizes the chemical, analytical, and pharmacological validation of extracts, fractions, and isolated compounds from sources such as green, red, and brown propolis and Copaifera species, including studies on antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and other biological activities, as well as the development of validated analytical methods. He holds a 1A productivity scholarship from CNPq and maintains an active research program involving international collaborations and student supervision at FCFRP-USP. Bastos is recognized as a Professor of Pharmacognosy and has contributed extensively to the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications.
