About j
Jye-Chyi (J. C.) Lu is a professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin in 1988 and his B.S. in Applied Mathematics from National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan in 1979. After completing his doctorate, Lu joined the statistics faculty at North Carolina State University, where he served until 1999. That year, he joined Georgia Tech's School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, advancing to his current position as professor. Lu's research focuses on data mining, industrial statistics, quality and reliability engineering, supply chain and logistics, engineering statistics and analytics, economic decision modeling and optimization, data-driven analytic tools, energy distribution network design, and intelligent operations and optimization problems for new generational grid edge ecosystems.
Lu has earned numerous honors for his teaching and contributions, including multiple Course Instructor Opinion Survey (CIOS) Honor Rolls (2021 Summer, 2022 Summer, 2023 Spring and Summer, 2024 Fall, 2025 Spring and Summer), the 2022 CIOS Student Recognition of Excellence in Teaching Award, Jim Pop Fellowship, INFORMS Quality, Statistics, and Reliability (QSR) Cluster Chair in 2007, Fellowship in the American Statistical Association in 2007, INFORMS QSR Program Chair in 2006, IEEE Senior Member status in 2003, North Carolina State University Outstanding Extension Service Award for 1997–1998, NCSU PAMS College Outstanding Faculty Outreach Award for 1996–1997, and the David D. Mason Outstanding Faculty Award in the Department of Statistics at NCSU in 1996. His influential publications include “Some New Constructions of Bivariate Weibull Models” with G. K. Bhattacharyya (Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 1990), “Inference Procedures for a Bivariate Exponential Model of Gumbel” with G. K. Bhattacharyya (Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, 1991), “Characterization and Optimization of A Wave Soldering Process” with P. Mesenbrink, R. McKenzie, and J. Taheri (Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1994), “Statistical Inference of a Time-to-Failure Distribution from Linear Degradation Data” with J. Park and Q. Yang (Technometrics, 1997), “Achieving Uniformity in a Semiconductor Fabrication Process Using Spatial Modeling” with J. M. Hughes-Oliver, J. C. Davis, and R. S. Gyurcsik (Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1998), and “A Hierarchical Decomposition Approach to Retail Shelf Space Management and Assortment Decisions” with J. Irion, F. A. Al-Khayyal, and Y.-C. Tsao (Journal of the Operational Research Society, 2011).
