About Ioannis
Ioannis Goulos is a Senior Lecturer in Propulsion Aerodynamics and Performance Engineering at Cranfield University. He holds a five-year full-time diploma in Mechanical Engineering awarded in 2009 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and a doctorate on aeroelasticity simulation of propulsion systems for rotorcraft completed in 2012 at Cranfield University. Goulos joined the Propulsion Engineering Centre at Cranfield University as a doctoral researcher in 2009 and subsequently served as a Research Fellow in Gas Turbine Technology before his current appointment as Senior Lecturer. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Aeronautical Society, and the Technical Chamber of Greece.
His research focuses on propulsion aerodynamics and performance engineering, including structural and rotor dynamics, rotary-wing aircraft aerodynamics, helicopter flight dynamics and aeroelasticity, gas turbine performance and installation aerodynamics, multidisciplinary design optimisation, computational fluid dynamics, reduced-order modelling, and aero-acoustics. Goulos leads several MSc modules and short courses at Cranfield University, including Jet Engine Control, Fundamentals of Aircraft Engine Control, Propulsion Systems Performance and Integration, and Rotorcraft/UAM Aeromechanics and Propulsion Modelling. He has received multiple awards, including the ASME-IGTI Best Paper Award in 2012 and 2013, the Lord Kings Norton Medal in 2014 for the most outstanding doctoral thesis, the Valensi Award in 2019, and the 2018 Silver Award from the Royal Aeronautical Society. Goulos has authored more than 100 technical articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences and serves on the editorial board of the MDPI Aerospace Journal.
