Dr. Iain C. Macmillan serves as Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Monash University. A Consultant Psychiatrist since 1995, he has focused on early intervention in psychosis and youth mental health since 2003, with particular interest in treating affective psychoses, including bipolar disorder and depression with psychosis. He completed his medical training at the University of Cambridge and Guy’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, obtaining a BA in Medical Sciences Tripos in 1982, MB.BS in 1985, and MA in 1986. Prior to specializing in psychiatry, he worked in general medicine. His extensive career includes positions such as Consultant Psychiatrist at Royal Perth Hospital (1999-2003), Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Trust (2003-2009), Clinical Director at the Black Dog Institute in New South Wales (2009-2010), Medical Director at Orygen Youth Health (2010-2011), and various leadership roles in the UK's Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, including Lead Consultant for Community Services (2012-2015) and Regional Early Intervention Clinical Lead for Psychiatry for NHS England North (2015-2017). He was also Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Newcastle University. Since returning to Victoria in 2017, he is Consultant Psychiatrist to the headspace Early Psychosis team in Frankston, Victoria, and Alfred Hospital (since 2018), and previously Head of Youth Mental Health at Peninsula Health (2018-2020).
Dr. Macmillan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK), Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, International College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and International Society for Affective Disorders, and a member of several international societies including the International Association for Youth Mental Health and International Early Psychosis Association. He chairs the Victorian Subcommittee of Youth Psychiatry, is Deputy Chair of the Bi-National Subcommittee for Advanced Training in Youth Psychiatry, and serves as Victorian representative on the RANZCP’s Section for Youth Mental Health Bi-National Committee. He has been involved in developing and evaluating specialist training programs for psychiatrists in youth mental health. His research interests include adolescent and general adult psychiatry, MRI changes in bipolar disorders, psychosocial interventions in early psychosis, and autoantibody-associated autoimmune diseases in psychosis. As Principal Investigator, he has led multicentre international studies such as the BALANCE and CEQUEL trials and the PPiP study on autoantibodies in first-episode psychoses. Key publications include 'Quality prescribing in early psychosis: key pharmacotherapy principles' (Australasian Psychiatry, 2022), 'A certificate in youth psychiatry: meeting the training needs of psychiatrists' (Australasian Psychiatry, 2021), 'Youth Psychiatry: A new subspecialty within psychiatry: Progress in Australia and New Zealand' (Early Intervention in Psychiatry, 2023), and 'Translating Research Findings into Clinical Decision-Making Thresholds for Young People at Risk of Bipolar Disorders' (World Journal of Psychiatry and Mental Health Research, 2024).
