About Hayley
Hayley Ward is Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for BSc (Top-Up)/MSc Healthcare Practice, MSc Leadership in Healthcare, and PGCert/MA Education for Health Professionals at the University of Surrey’s School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, within the Workforce, Organisation and Wellbeing Expert Group. She joined the University in 2019 as a Teaching Fellow on the undergraduate Paramedic Science programme and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2025. Ward holds a BSc (Hons) Paramedic Practitioner (Community Emergency Health) with First Class Honours from the University of Plymouth (2014), a PGCert in Education for Health Professionals from the University of Surrey (2020), and an MSc in Healthcare Practice (Advanced Practice) from St George’s, University of London (2022). She completed specialist paramedic training in Urgent Care with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and the College of Paramedics/St George’s, University of London in 2018. Prior to her academic career, Ward worked as a Paramedic and Rotational Paramedic Practitioner with the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust from 2014 to 2018, gaining experience in urgent and emergency care, GP surgery home visits, and the Emergency Operations Centre.
Ward’s research interests centre on professionalism in healthcare, workforce wellbeing, contemporary issues in health education, urgent and emergency care, and the education of healthcare professionals. She is leading a mixed-methods study on students’ understanding of generative AI in academic practice to inform institutional approaches to digital literacy and academic integrity. Her work is situated within the Workforce, Organisation and Wellbeing Expert Group, emphasising practice-relevant and policy-informed contributions to the healthcare workforce. Ward is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA, awarded 2024) and a member of the College of Paramedics. She leads curriculum design, delivery, and revalidation for part-time postgraduate programmes for practising clinicians, provides academic supervision and pastoral support, and serves as the University of Surrey lead for the NHS England Internship Model for Supporting Future Practice Educators in the South East project. Her teaching focuses on healthcare education, leadership, and evidence-based practice, drawing on her clinical background to foster critical thinking and reflective practice among students.
