Hwan-Sik Yoon served as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Engineering faculty at Tennessee Technological University from August 2007 to July 2012. He holds a B.S. in Physics Education from Seoul National University, Korea, earned in 1994; an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1998; and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 2002. Prior to his appointment at Tennessee Tech, Dr. Yoon worked as a Research Associate at The Ohio State University from 2003 to 2007. Following his tenure at Tennessee Technological University, he joined The University of Alabama as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
At Tennessee Technological University, Dr. Yoon was a faculty participant in the Center for Energy Systems Research within the Mechanical Engineering department. He collaborated with Dr. Stephen Canfield on the EIME project, funded by the Tennessee State Department of Education-Division of Special Education. This multi-year initiative, spanning preschool and school-age programs, aimed to develop innovative assistive technology devices for children with disabilities and integrate real-world design problems into the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate curriculum. The project served over 125 children and involved more than 600 engineering students. Dr. Yoon contributed to key publications affiliated with Tennessee Tech, including 'An optimal method of shape control for deformable structures with piezoelectric stack actuators' published in Smart Materials and Structures in 2010, and 'Lamb wave excitation and detection with smart fasteners for structural health monitoring' presented at SPIE in 2010. Additional works from around this period include 'Hysteresis-reduced dynamic displacement control of piezoceramic stack actuators using model predictive sliding mode control' in 2012. In recognition of his productivity and contributions, he received the College of Engineering Faculty Productivity Award from Tennessee Technological University in 2012. Dr. Yoon is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). His research specializations encompass modeling, simulation, and control of dynamic systems, with emphasis on smart materials, piezoelectric actuators, and structural health monitoring.
