Hui Zhong Shen

Associate Professor Hui Zhong Shen serves in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney, part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Throughout his career at the university, he has undertaken various senior leadership roles, shaping the direction of educational research and administration. Shen's academic interests center on teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), with a particular emphasis on Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. His research investigates self-regulated strategic learning in English medium instruction courses, the role of mobile technologies in fostering learning strategies, interactions with AI-programmed chatbots for language acquisition, and educational entrepreneurship within Australian community languages schools.

Shen has produced numerous peer-reviewed publications that advance the field of technology-enhanced language pedagogy. His body of work includes approximately 10 research outputs with 194 citations on ResearchGate. Key publications are: "Chinese university students' self-regulated strategic learning in English medium instruction courses" (2025, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, co-authored with Pengzhan Yang, Wenqian Huang, Hongzhi Yang, Chuan Gao); "Mobile-technology-induced learning strategies: Chinese university EFL students’ learning English in an emerging context" (2021, ReCALL, with Chuan Gao); "Learner interaction with, and response to, AI-programmed chatbot for English learning" (2024, Education and Information Technologies, with Hongzhi Yang, Chuan Gao); "Educational entrepreneurship in Australian community languages schools: Implications for community language schools in NSW" (2022, Cogent Education, with Hongzhi Yang); and "Metamorphosis of English Language Learners' Behaviours in a Virtual World" (2024, IntechOpen chapter, with Chuan Gao). Shen supervises doctoral students researching peer learning in Chinese EFL contexts, digital planning tools, and collaborative writing using automated writing evaluation. He serves on the editorial team of the University of Sydney Journal of TESOL, contributes to the university's TESOL research forum, and is a member of the China Studies Centre.
