Dr. Hong Zhuang is a Professor of Economics, Chair of the Department of Decision Sciences and Economics, and Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics, Indiana University South Bend. Prior to her appointment at IU South Bend, she taught at the University of Oregon. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Oregon (2007), an MA in Economics from the University of Oregon (2003), and a BA from Xiamen University (2000). Her research interests include international economics, macroeconomics, development economics, and applied econometrics, with a focus on foreign direct investment, economic development, and growth. Zhuang’s scholarly contributions have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Applied Economics Letters, Annals of Economics and Finance, Bulletin of Economic Research, Eastern European Economics, Economics and Business Letters, International Economic Journal, Journal of Globalization and Development, and Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy. Notable publications comprise “The effect of foreign direct investment on human capital development in East Asia” (Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy, 2017), “Mergers and Acquisitions Versus Greenfield Investment, Absorptive Capacity, and Economic Growth: Evidence from 12 New Member States of the European Union” (Eastern European Economics, 2015), “Foreign Direct Investment and Human Capital Accumulation in China” (International Research Journal of Finance and Economics, 2008), “FDI and educational outcomes in developing countries” (Empirical Economics, 2021), and “The Effect of FDI on Local Education Expenditures: Evidence from the United States” (Bulletin of Economic Research, 2013).
Dr. Zhuang has been recognized with multiple awards and grants, including Trustee’s Teaching Awards (2019, 2011), Faculty Research Grants (2021, 2018, 2016), SBE Faculty Development Research Fellowships (2022, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2011), UCET/FACET Faculty Development Grants (2019, 2012), Software and Equipment for Engagement and Discovery Grants (2018, 2016), Online Course Development Fund (2017), Faculty-in-Residence Grant (2015), IU Overseas Conference Travel Grant (2012), and annual Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service Awards (2010–2020) from the Judd Leighton School of Business and Economics.
