Hong Zhang is a Professor of Computer Science at Georgia Southern University in the Department of Computer Science within the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing. He joined the institution in 1999 and has contributed extensively to its academic programs, including teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science. Zhang earned his B.S. in Computer Science from Fudan University in 1982, M.S.E.E. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1984, M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985, and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989. As an alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh, he brings a strong foundation in both computer science and mathematics to his work.
Zhang's research interests include machine learning and its biomedical applications, algebraic graph theory, computer networks, and computer and systems architecture. His scholarly output encompasses 19 research items, including a book and numerous conference proceedings. Key publications include the co-authored book Computer Graphics Using Java 2D and 3D (2006) with Y. Daniel Liang, "An Experimental Evaluation of a Function in Extremal Combinatorics" (2021) with K. Wang, "A Novel Naive Bayesian Approach to Inference with Applications to the MNIST Handwritten Digit Classification" (2020) with K. Wang, "Online Updating for Gaussian Process Learning" (2018) with H. Su, "Hybrid Clustering Based on a Graph Model" (2016) with H. Su, and "Distances and kernels based on cumulative distribution functions" (2015) with H. Su. These works have been presented at international conferences such as the International Conference on Computational Science and Computational Intelligence and the International Symposium on Computational Intelligence and Design. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and industry, innovation, and infrastructure. Earlier in his career, Zhang held positions including research scientist at BIOwulf Technologies, vice president and chief information officer at Horus Therapeutics, and assistant and associate professor of mathematical sciences at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. At Armstrong State University, prior to its merger with Georgia Southern University, he served as Yamacraw Associate Professor of Computer Science, department head, and various interim leadership roles.
