Dr. Hoa Luong serves as a Senior Lecturer in Accounting in the Department of Accountancy and Finance at the University of Otago's Otago Business School. She joined the department in February 2020. Luong obtained her PhD from Curtin University, Australia, in 2019, earning the Chancellor's Commendation Award, and completed a Master of Business from Monash University. She holds CPA certification from Australia and Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) status from the UK. Prior to her PhD, she worked as a lecturer in accounting and finance at the Academy of Finance in Vietnam. During her doctoral studies, she gained teaching and research experience at Curtin University, the University of Western Australia, and Edith Cowan University.
Luong's research specializations encompass data analytics, financial technologies including blockchain and artificial intelligence, corporate reporting, corporate governance, performance measurement, and management. She has published in leading journals, with key works including 'Co-opted boards and bidder performance' (2025, China Accounting & Finance Review, with S. Shams and N. Z. Ovi), 'CEO power and financial statement comparability' (2025, International Journal of Managerial Finance, with A. Gunasekarage and P. K. Biswas), 'CEO connectedness and firm transparency' (2025, European Financial Management, with K. Minnick, M. L. Rivolta, and S. Shams), 'Board co-option and corporate environmental orientation: New insights from the waste management perspective' (2024, Corporate Governance: An International Review, with A. A. Gull and M. Nadeem), and 'CEO power and carbon emissions management: Australian evidence' (2024, Business Strategy & the Environment, with J. Kumarasiri and A. Gunasekarage). As Principal Investigator, she has secured grants from AFAANZ, University of Otago Research Grant, Otago Business School, and others, totaling significant funding. Awards include Outstanding Reviewer from Emerald Literati Awards (Pacific Accounting Review, 2024), Best Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching Innovation Award (Otago Business School, 2021), Top 3 Reviewers (Accounting Research Journal, 2021), Best Paper Award (SEDM2019 Conference, 2019), and Doctoral Research Scholarships (Australian Government and Curtin University, 2015-2018). She holds leadership roles such as New Zealand Chair of AFAANZ Data Analytics SIG (2024-present) and Accounting Education SIG (2023-2024), Chair of the Department Teaching and Learning Committee, and Academic Co-leader of the Otago Business School Internship Program (2021-2023). Luong supervises PhD students, reviews for international journals, and teaches courses in accounting analytics, management accounting, and internships.
