Helen Hu

Professor Helen Hu is Professor of Strategic Management in the Department of Management and Marketing within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. She serves as Director of the Centre for Asian Business and Economics. Hu earned her PhD in international business from Monash University, where she holds an Honorary Research Fellow appointment. Her research specializations encompass corporate governance, boards of directors, ownership structures, initial public offerings, and the internationalization of Asian firms, with particular attention to Chinese listed firms and business management. Her scholarly work examines governance mechanisms in emerging markets, state capitalism, and firm performance.

At the University of Melbourne, Hu has advanced through academic ranks to full professor, contributing significantly to strategy and international business scholarship. Her publications appear in premier journals including Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of World Business, Journal of International Business Studies, and Asia Pacific Journal of Management. Notable publications include "What drives firms’ intent to seek strategic assets by foreign direct investment? A study of emerging economy firms" (Journal of World Business, 2014), "The Dark Side of Board Political Capital: Enabling Blockholder Rent Appropriation" (Academy of Management Journal, 2016), "Internal governance mechanisms and firm performance in China" (Asia Pacific Journal of Management, 2010), "State capitalism and performance persistence of business group-affiliated firms: A comparative study of China and India" (Journal of International Business Studies, 2019), and "Corporate governance and IPO underpricing in a cross-national sample: A multilevel knowledge-based view" (Strategic Management Journal, 2015). She received the Dean's Prize for Exceptional Distinction in Research in 2020 for supervising an outstanding PhD student and several Deans’ Certificates for Research Excellence and Teaching Excellence. A member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Hu regularly comments on Asian business issues for Sky News, SBS, and China Radio International.
