About Harley

Harley Acres is an Assistant Professor and serves as the Art Department Chair at Pikes Peak State College, where he has been a member of the Art Faculty since 2007. Originally from Mississippi, he is a product of the community college system, having begun his artistic education at a community college, following in the footsteps of his parents who were community college instructors. During his undergraduate studies, Acres focused on printmaking and attained a degree in art history. He earned his M.A. in Art History from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2007. A key component of his graduate experience was participation in a study abroad program through the University of Alabama, spending a year in Osaka, Japan, at Kansai Gaidai University studying Japanese ink painting (sumi-e) and the Japanese language.

Acres' academic interests encompass Japanese art of the 1800s, manga, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and Symbolist art. He has written extensively on the Japanese manga artist Rumiko Takahashi and maintains the website furinkan.com dedicated to her work and writings. He is a member of the South Eastern College Art Conference (SECAC). Among his professional honors, Acres was a guest lecturer at Harvard University’s Invitational Conference on Gender Issues in Asia. At Pikes Peak State College, he teaches core courses including ART 1110: Art Appreciation, ART 1111: Art History Ancient to Medieval, ART 1112: Art History Renaissance to 1900, and ART 1113: Art History 1900 to Present.
