Gregory D. Foley is the Robert L. Morton Professor of Mathematics Education in The Patton College of Education at Ohio University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Mathematics. He received B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from The University of Texas at Austin. Foley has taught mathematics from basic arithmetic through graduate-level courses and undergraduate- to Ph.D.-level education classes since 1975 at institutions in Ohio, North Carolina, and Texas. His career includes full-time teaching beginning in 1977 at North Harris County College in Houston and leadership in mathematics education programs, including directing the Patton College's mathematics education doctoral program, which ranked 25th nationally.
Foley's research specializes in mathematics education, with emphasis on quantitative reasoning, inquiry-based instruction, cognitively demanding tasks, tools and technology to enhance student knowledge construction, spatial thinking, quantitative literacy, financial modeling, teacher professional development in statistics and modeling, and the mathematical transition from secondary to postsecondary education. He is the principal investigator of the U.S. National Science Foundation-funded QuantNetOhio project (award 2216197), which develops a statewide professional development network for effective teaching of undergraduate quantitative reasoning courses. Foley has co-authored key textbooks, including Advanced Quantitative Reasoning: Mathematics for the World Around Us (revised edition, 2017) with T. R. Butts, S. W. Phelps, and D. A. Showalter, and Precalculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic (AP 11th edition, 2024) with F. D. Demana, B. K. Waits, and others. Selected publications include "Instructional decision making in a gateway Quantitative Reasoning course" (Numeracy, 2024, with D. Budhathoki and S. Shadik), "More of the story: Ruminations on 'How Mathematics Education in Ohio Impacted the Nation'" (Ohio Journal of School Mathematics, 2024), "Instructor perspectives on quantitative reasoning for critical citizenship" (ZDM–Mathematics Education, 2023, with D. Budhathoki, A. B. Thapa, and H. P. Aryal), and "From gatekeeper to gateway: The role of quantitative reasoning" (Ohio Journal of School Mathematics, 2021, with P. W. Wachira). His work has earned awards such as the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Award for Mathematics Excellence (1998), Teachers Teaching with Technology Leadership Award (2005), Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics Kenneth Cummins Award (2015), and Christofferson-Fawcett Award for lifetime contributions to mathematics education (2022).
