He obtained his BSc(Agric) from UWA in 1975 and PhD in Animal Science in 1983, with a thesis on factors affecting luteinizing hormone secretion in the ewe. Martin commenced at UWA as a Tutor in the Department of Animal Science & Production in 1978, advancing to Lecturer (1986), Senior Lecturer (1990), Associate Professor (1996), and Professor (2002). He held key leadership positions including Head of the School of Animal Biology (2007–2013), Dean of the Faculty of Natural & Agricultural Sciences (2002–2003), Chair of the Academic Board (2005–2006), and Deputy Director of the UWA Institute of Agriculture. Martin's research examines environmental factors influencing reproduction in livestock, particularly sheep, including nutrition, pheromones, photoperiod, and stressors, with expertise in reproductive neuroscience, physiology, endocrinology, and behaviour. He pioneered 'clean, green, and ethical' animal production and led the UWA Future Farm 2050 project integrating crop, livestock, and ecosystem restoration. He has produced 272 articles, 93 conference papers, 19 book chapters, and 18 reviews, including 'Frontiers in sheep reproduction - making use of natural responses to environmental challenges to manage productivity' (2022, Frontiers in Veterinary Science), 'Cellular and molecular responses of adult testis to changes in nutrition: Novel insights from the sheep model' (2017, Reproduction), and 'Agriculture: Steps to sustainable livestock' (2014). Martin supervised 43 PhD students, received the 2021 Marshall Medal from the Society for Reproduction and Fertility, Fellowship of the Australian Association of Animal Sciences (2021), and Lifetime Achievement Award (2022), and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Reproduction, Fertility and Development since 2015.
