Rate My Professor Gongyou Chen

Professor Gongyou Chen is a professor in the Department of Resources and Environment at the School of Agriculture and Biology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He earned his B.Sc. in Plant Protection from Henan Agricultural University in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Nanjing Agricultural University in 2000. His career includes positions as lecturer and associate professor at Henan Agricultural University from 1984 to 2001, followed by roles as associate professor, professor, and doctoral supervisor at Nanjing Agricultural University from 2001 to 2008. He joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University as professor and doctoral supervisor in 2008 and has served as Associate Dean of the School of Agriculture and Biology since 2015. Additional appointments include postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Durham from 2003 to 2005 and Tang’s Scholar and visiting professor at Cornell University from 2007 to 2009.

Chen’s research focuses on molecular plant-microbe interactions, biocontrol of plant diseases, and plant immunity, with particular emphasis on the rice pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae. He has led numerous national research projects, including those under the 973 and 863 programs and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His contributions include over 70 publications in journals such as Molecular Microbiology, Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, and Applied and Environmental Microbiology, as well as two second prizes and three third prizes for provincial or ministerial scientific and technological progress and six national invention patents. He has served as a member of the 12th International Committee on Plant Pathogenic Bacteriology, chairman of the 13th such committee, and a second-level audit expert for the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
