Gert Human is Professor of Strategic Management and Head of the Department of Business Management in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University. He chairs the programme focal area of Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship within the department. Prior to his full-time academic appointment, Human held senior management positions in the South African private healthcare sector. He obtained his PhD in Business Management from the University of Cape Town and Manchester Business School. His research specializations centre on strategy in complex business-to-business networks and strategic transformation, with additional focus on industrial marketing. Human serves on multiple editorial boards and contributes to the academic community through supervision of master's and PhD students. In 2018, he delivered his inaugural lecture titled 'The dark side of business interdependence and the collaboration-opportunism paradox,' highlighting how opportunistic behaviour in interdependent relationships reduces trust and cooperation while being influenced by factors such as dependence, uncertainty, power imbalances, competitive intensity, market turbulence, and organizational culture. He emphasized the role of social capital in moderating such behaviour amid growing business network complexity.
Human's scholarly output includes impactful publications in leading journals. Notable works are 'Linking absorptive capacity, knowledge transfer and transactive memory' (Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing, 2021), 'Customer experience, satisfaction and loyalty in business-to-business markets: Does the chain hold across customer segments?' (Acta Commercii, 2020), 'How macro level foundations influence emerging micro entrepreneurial activities: The case of South Africa' (Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Issues, 2020), 'Perceived Risk, Trust and Familiarity of Online Multi-Sided Pure-Play Platforms Selling Physical Offerings in an Emerging Market' (Southern African Business Review, 2019), 'The effect of online video content on sponsorship favourability' (International Journal of Emerging Markets, 2018), 'Heterogeneity in the quality-satisfaction-loyalty framework' (Industrial Marketing Management, 2014), and 'Student recruitment marketing in South Africa - An exploratory study into the adoption of a relationship orientation' (2010). These contributions advance understanding of B2B marketing strategies, network competence, and innovation orientation in emerging markets, evidenced by citations exceeding 478 across his profile with an h-index of 10.
