Professor Georges Grau serves as Professor and Chair of Vascular Immunology in the Department of Pathology, School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney, a position held since 2006. He earned his MD from the University of Liège and Privat-Docent from the University of Geneva in 1992. Prior to his current role, he was Research Associate at the WHO Immunology Research and Training Centre, University of Geneva, from 1980 to 1995, conducting research in the Department of Pathology and Immunology there.
Professor Grau's research specializes in immunopathology of microvascular lesions, focusing on cerebral and pulmonary complications of infectious and autoimmune diseases, including cerebral malaria. His investigations cover cytokines, microvascular endothelium, extracellular vesicles such as microparticles, and their implications in infectious diseases, immunopathology, endothelium biology, and cancer. Designated fields of research include pathology (excluding oral pathology), medical parasitology, medical mycology, medical microbiology, rheumatology and arthritis, and clinical sciences. He has 471 publications on ResearchGate and over 46,300 citations on Google Scholar. Key publications are "Microparticles as Immune Regulators in Infectious Disease" (Frontiers in Immunology, 2011) and "Platelets as pathogenetic effectors and killer cells in cerebral malaria" (Expert Review of Hematology, 2016). Funding includes a $225,000 NHMRC three-year Project Grant in 2018 for harnessing vitamin D and killer cells against multiple sclerosis, ARC grants, and CJD Support Group Network Australia $10,000 award. He serves as editor for journals like Journal of Neuroinfectious Diseases (OMICS International) and DISCOVERIES. In 2025, he was listed among the top 2% global scientists.
