About G. H.

G. H. Peiris is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He received his B.A. (Hons.) in Geography with First Class Honours from the University of Peradeniya in 1960 and his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1965. Peiris joined the academic staff of the Department of Geography at the University of Peradeniya in July 1960 and served there for forty-three years until September 2003. In May 2022, he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya.

Peiris's research focuses on land reform, agrarian change, poverty, economic inequalities, ethnic conflicts, peace efforts, and political struggles in Sri Lanka and South Asia. His key publications include 'The current land reforms and peasant agriculture in Sri Lanka' (1975), 'Land Reform and Agrarian Change in Sri Lanka' (1978), 'Poverty, Development and Conflict in South Asia' (1999), 'Federal Option for Sri Lanka' (2001), 'Economic Inequalities and Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka' (2005), 'The Responsibility to Protect and External Interventions in the Sri Lankan Conflict' (2008), 'Twilight of the Tigers: Peace Efforts and Power Struggles in Sri Lanka' (2009), 'Political Conflict in South Asia' (2013), 'A study of Contemporary Buddhist-Muslim Relations in Sri Lanka' (2017), and 'Sri Lanka: Land Policy for Sustainable Development to strengthen the struggle for survival' (2021). He has undertaken consultancies and external collaborations for the International Labour Organization, World Health Organization, UNICEF, Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi, International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Kandy and Colombo, and Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi.
