Frank Wilczek is a theoretical physicist whose academic career includes substantial connections to Princeton University, where he completed his Ph.D. in physics in 1974 after earning an M.A. in mathematics there in 1972. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Chicago in 1970. Wilczek served on the faculty at Princeton from 1974 to 1981. His research specializations encompass particle physics, quantum chromodynamics, and related areas such as axions, anyons, and time crystals. Subsequent appointments include positions at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Institute for Advanced Study as the J.R. Oppenheimer Professor, and since 2000 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics. He has also held adjunct and visiting roles at other institutions.
Wilczek shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics with David Gross and H. David Politzer for the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction, work completed while he was a graduate student at Princeton. Additional honors include a MacArthur Fellowship in 1982, the Dirac Medal, the Lorentz Medal, the Sakurai Prize, and the Templeton Prize in 2022. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Wilczek has authored books including The Lightness of Being (2008), A Beautiful Question (2015), and Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality (2021).
