Her research specializations encompass decision support systems, knowledge management, health informatics, context awareness, and information systems aimed at enhancing decision-making and user interaction across devices. Burstein has secured over AUD 3 million in competitive grants since 1995, leading projects such as ARC Discovery initiatives on Smart Information Portals for healthcare and Linkage projects developing ontologies for medical emergency management. With 263 research outputs—including 129 conference papers, 59 journal articles, and 29 book chapters—her work has garnered over 5,271 citations.
