Fidan Kurtulus is a Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, contributing to the Business & Economics faculty through her expertise in labor economics. She joined the Department of Economics in 2007 as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013, and to full Professor in 2018. Kurtulus also serves as Faculty Director of the Center for Employment Equity since 2017, Wertheim Fellow at Harvard Law School since 2013, Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) since 2012, and Research Coordinator at the LERA Employment Policy Research Network since 2011. She previously held positions including Women and Public Policy Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School of Government from 2015 to 2016, J. Robert Beyster Fellow at Rutgers University from 2009 to 2010, and various research roles at Cornell University, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Kurtulus earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University in 2008 with a dissertation on the organization of workers within firms and her B.A. in Economics with departmental and general honors from the University of Chicago in 2000.
Her research focuses on labor economics topics including the organization of workers within firms, participatory workplace practices and employee ownership, causes and consequences of workplace diversity, and long-term effects of affirmative action on U.S. employment since the Civil Rights Movement. Key publications include the book How Did Employee Ownership Firms Weather the Last Two Recessions? Employee Ownership, Employment Stability, and Firm Survival: 1999-2011 (with Douglas Kruse, W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, 2017); The Impact of Affirmative Action on the Employment of Women and Minorities Over Three Decades: 1973-2003 (Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, 2016); Affirmative Action and the Occupational Advancement of Minorities and Women During 1973-2003 (Industrial Relations, 2012); An Empirical Analysis of the Relationship between Employee Ownership and Employment Stability in the U.S.: 1999-2011 (with Doug Kruse, British Journal of Industrial Relations, 2018); and An Empirical Analysis of Risk, Incentives and the Delegation of Worker Authority (with Jed L. DeVaro, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 2010). Kurtulus has received the Early Career Research Award from the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research (2012), Joseph Cabral Distinguished Fellowship (2014-2016), Chancellor's Junior Faculty Fellow at UMass Amherst (2010), and J. Robert Beyster Fellowship (2009).
