Professor Farid Boussaid is a Professor in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering within the School of Engineering at The University of Western Australia. He received his M.S. degree in 1996 and Ph.D. degree in 1999 from the National Institute of Applied Science (INSA), Toulouse, France. In March 2000, he joined Edith Cowan University as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and became a member of the Visual Information Processing Research Group. In December 2001, he was awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship. He joined The University of Western Australia in 2005 as a lecturer, advancing to Professor, and served as Head of the School of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering from 2014 to 2017. He is also a member of the UWA Oceans Institute and the UWA Defence and Security Institute.
Prof. Boussaid's academic interests include microelectronics, mixed-mode integrated circuit design, machine learning and deep learning, neuromorphic engineering, gas sensors, camera-on-a-chip, smart sensors, and computer vision. He has published over 160 papers, garnering more than 8,661 citations and an h-index of 43 on Google Scholar. Key publications encompass 'Hands-on Bayesian Neural Networks—A Tutorial for Deep Learning Users' (2022, 1,392 citations), 'A new representation of skeleton sequences for 3D action recognition' (2017, 1,127 citations), 'A Survey on Deep Learning Techniques for Stereo-based Depth Estimation' (2022, 504 citations), 'SkeletonNet: Mining deep part features for 3-D action recognition' (2017, 217 citations), and recent contributions like 'AEDNet: Adaptive Embedding and Multiview-Aware Disentanglement for Point Cloud Completion' (2025) and 'A Guide to Image- and Video-Based Small Object Detection Using Deep Learning: Case Study of Maritime Surveillance' (2025). His impact is highlighted by five international Best Paper Awards, including the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Circuits and Systems Best Paper Award, fellowships from the ARC, National Science Foundation (USA), and Tokyo University of Science, and an Award for Growth in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (2021). For teaching, he received the UWA Award for Excellence in Teaching (2014), UWA Student Guild Students' Choice Award (2014), and a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2016) from the Australian Department of Education and Training. Prof. Boussaid serves as Senior Editor for IEEE Access.
