Dr. Evelyn Chiong Tung is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Energy Engineering at Curtin University Malaysia. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Curtin University Malaysia, obtained with the support of a Curtin University Higher Degree by Research Scholarship in 2013, and a BEng (Hons.) First Class in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), she is actively involved in professional activities, serving as a committee member of the Industry Advisory Panel for Chemical Engineering, the Industrial and External Engagement Committee for Chemical and Energy Engineering, and the Accreditation and Audit Committee for Chemical and Energy Engineering. She is also an affiliate member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and a graduate member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
Dr. Tung's research specializations include water treatment, separation, and reaction processes, with emphasis on wastewater treatment and enzyme immobilization. Her contributions feature enzymatic approaches for dye and phenol removal using plant-based peroxidases, graphene oxide-based nanocomposites for methylene blue and organic dye adsorption, and microalgae-derived nanoparticles for emerging contaminants remediation. Key publications encompass "Enzymatic treatment of methyl orange dye in synthetic wastewater by plant-based peroxidase enzymes" (Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, 2016), "Advanced oxidation and biological integrated processes for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment: a review" (Journal of Environmental Management, 2024), "Green synthesis of graphene-oxide based nanocomposites for efficient removal of methylene blue dye from wastewater" (Desalination, 2023), "Selective adsorption of organic dyes from aqueous environment using fermented maize extract-enhanced graphene oxide-durian shell derived activated carbon composite" (Chemosphere, 2023), "Advances in graphene oxide based nanobiocatalytic technology for wastewater treatment" (Environmental Nanotechnology, Monitoring & Management, 2022), and the book chapter "Microalgal-based protein by-products: Extraction, purification, and applications" (2016). As Principal Investigator, she directs grants including the Curtin Malaysia Higher Degree Research Grant for microalgae-based CuO nanoflower photocatalysts for ciprofloxacin degradation (2022–2025) and the Yayasan Sarawak Research Grant for microalgae-based CuO/ZnO hybrid composites (2024–2026). Honors include the Best Presenter Award at the 5th International Conference on Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering (2015).
