Dr Estelle Jaine serves as Senior Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice at the University of Otago, Wellington, within the Division of Health Sciences. Qualified with a BMLSc, MBChB, and PGCertHighE (Clinical), she has practiced as a General Practitioner. Her career emphasizes medical education in the MBChB programme, where she plays key roles in curriculum delivery and student development.
As Clinical Skills Director in the Education Unit, Dr Jaine supports the enhancement of clinical skills across the medical curriculum. She convenes the Te Whakapounga Orientation Module for fourth-year students, organizing activities like a 2026 digital treasure hunt that engaged 104 students in navigating the campus through 12 interactive stations, including mock consultations and keyhole surgery simulations to build familiarity and preparedness. Dr Jaine also convenes the Clinical Decision Making module, working closely with the Professional Development and Ethics team led by Dr Ben Gray and Professor Angela Ballantyne to integrate ethical principles with clinical judgments. Her contributions extend to undergraduate teaching in Professional Practice 5 and Primary Health Care & General Practice modules, covering topics such as uncertainty in medicine, shared decision-making, teamwork in healthcare, and practical general practice skills.
In scholarly activities, Dr Jaine co-authored the 2024 publication 'Prescribing deprescribing for polypharmacy in Aotearoa New Zealand: experiences of a medication review activity in final year medical students on a general practice module' in the Journal of Primary Health Care. This qualitative study analyzed surveys from 48 students and 10 supervisors, identifying themes like the value of medication reviews, complexities of medicines, importance of monitoring, and impacts on future prescribing practices. She participated as tutor and marker in a 2016 University Teaching Development Grant project on clinical reasoning peer assessment for Year 5 students.
