Erik Noschka is an academic clinician and equine surgeon serving as Associate Professor of Equine Surgery and Head of Department for Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Adelaide, located at the Roseworthy Veterinary Hospital. He originated from Germany, where he completed his veterinary training, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Leipzig between 1996 and 2002. He then pursued advanced studies in the United States, obtaining a PhD from the University of Georgia from 2004 to 2007 and a Master of Science (MS) from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg from 2007 to 2010, during which he also completed an American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Large Animal Surgery Residency at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Noschka joined the University of Adelaide in 2011 as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery, advancing to Associate Professor in 2016. From 2020 to 2022, he held a position as Associate Research Fellow at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. Since 2023, he has been Head of Department at the University of Adelaide.
Noschka's research focuses on biomarkers and inflammation, bridging equine health and gastroenterology within the One Health framework. His interests encompass biomedical engineering, biomedical instrumentation, general clinical medicine, preventive medicine, regenerative medicine, sports medicine, veterinary medicine, and comparative physiology. He leads grant-funded projects in collaboration with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute Stroke Research Program, ARC Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics, Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Royal Adelaide Hospital, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, North Carolina State University, and the University of Georgia. In teaching, he coordinates and delivers courses in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, including DVM3 Equine Clinical Rotation, DVM3 Transition to Veterinary Practice, DVM2 Equine Clinical Practice, DVM1 Professional Skills 1, and Fundamentals in Diagnostic Imaging, Anesthesia and Surgery, as well as programs in Bachelor of Animal Sciences, Veterinary Technician, Honours, and PhD levels. He serves on the University of Adelaide Animal Ethics Committee since 2018, Research Resources Committee since 2016, and DVM Program Management Committee since 2012. Key publications include 'Prostanoids as markers of oxidative stress in stallion semen' (Gallacher et al., 2025, Journal of Equine Veterinary Science); 'Standing flank laparotomy for colic: 37 cases' (Lopes et al., 2021, Equine Veterinary Journal); 'Tongue-tie use in Thoroughbred racehorses in Australia' (Noschka et al., 2021, Australian Veterinary Journal); 'Implications of urine F2-isoprostane metabolite concentration in horses with colic' (Noschka et al., 2011, Equine Veterinary Journal); and 'Evaluation of the possible role of prostaglandin F2α in laminitis induced in horses' (Noschka et al., 2010, American Journal of Veterinary Research).
