Dr. Emmanuel Alvarado serves as Professor III at Palm Beach State College's Palm Beach Gardens campus, where he joined the faculty in 2013. He teaches Spanish language courses including Elementary Spanish 1 (SPN 1120), Elementary Spanish 2 (SPN 1121), Intermediate Spanish 1 (SPN 2200), and Intermediate Spanish 2 (SPN 2201), as well as sociology courses such as Introduction to Sociology (SYG 2000) and American Social Problems (SYG 2010). His academic background includes a PhD in Comparative Studies with a concentration in Hispanic Studies from Florida Atlantic University, a Master of Arts in Spanish from Florida Atlantic University, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the Monterrey Institute of Technology. Dr. Alvarado's research focuses on sociolinguistics and Hispanic studies, exploring themes of multiculturalism, immigration, intimacy, migration, cultural change, fertility patterns among Mexican American women, poverty in post-NAFTA Mexico, and transnational self-help cultures.
Dr. Alvarado has an extensive publication record, serving as editor-in-chief for the Florida Atlantic Comparative Studies Journal (Volumes 10 and 11, 2007-2010), and authoring articles such as 'Attitudes Toward Immigrants and Multiculturalism in Contemporary America: the Role of Foreign Language Fluency' (Sociation Today, 2009), 'Intimacy, migration, and cultural change: Latinos and American Fertility' (Revista de Estudios Sociales, 2010), 'Narratives of Assimilation, Divergence, and Hybridity: the Fertility of College-Educated Mexican American Women' (Aztlan: Journal of Mexican American Studies, 2012), and 'Bridging the Differences: Second Language Fluency and Multiculturalism in America' (BOCA - The South Florida Journal of Linguistics, 2008). He co-edited Intimacies and Cultural Change (Ashgate, 2014) and co-authored Transnational Popular Psychology and the Global Self-Help Industry: The Politics of Contemporary Social Change (2016), along with contributing the chapter 'Neoliberalism and the Negotiation of the American Dream in Contemporary Latina Narratives' (2019). His honors include the 2021 NISOD Excellence Award for teaching and leadership, Florida Atlantic University Graduate Fellowships (2007-2010), Barnhart Foundation Sponsorships (2011-2013), and grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Eissey Campus Humanities Opportunity Fund, and Nancy Levin Fund. Dr. Alvarado holds leadership roles as NFE Faculty Developer, former foreign language cluster chair, general education committee chair, institutional review board chair, faculty liaison for the district diversity council, and Spanish Club advisor. He is affiliated with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Latin American Studies Association, Florida Distance Learning Association, and Modern Language Association.
