Dr Shan (Emma) Xue is a Senior Lecturer in Computing in the School of Computing at Macquarie University, part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She joined the School of Computing in January 2023. Prior to this, she was a Lecturer at the University of Wollongong in 2022 and a Postdoctoral Researcher at Macquarie University, jointly supported by CSIRO Data61, from 2019 to 2022. Xue earned her PhD in Software Engineering from the University of Technology Sydney in 2019 and a PhD in Information Management and Information Systems from Shanghai University in 2018. Her research expertise lies in deep learning, adaptive artificial intelligence, data mining, and knowledge discovery in complex cyber environments, with particular emphasis on social network analytics, pattern mining, and applicational intelligence.
Xue has authored 66 research outputs, including 36 journal articles and 29 conference proceedings, published in premier venues such as CORE A* conferences NeurIPS, IJCAI, WSDM, and ICDM, and journals including Pattern Recognition, The VLDB Journal, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. Key publications encompass 'A bidirectional feedback actor–critic approach for collaborative target search in heterogeneous intelligent agent systems' (IEEE Systems Journal, 2026), 'Extract and refine brain subgraph for disorder analysis via cross-domain learning' (IEEE Transactions on Big Data, 2026), 'Real-time multi-modal social event detection: a new dataset and a key instance-driven, quality-aware graph neural network' (IEEE Transactions on Big Data, 2026), and 'A multiagent-based framework on RoboCup simulation system for enhancing rescue operation during dynamic disaster environments' (WWW Companion '25, 2025). Her scholarship has amassed over 5,000 citations on Google Scholar. Xue has earned notable accolades, including Best Student Paper Awards in 2018 and 2021, the Most Influential IJCAI2020 Paper Award, the Outstanding Reviewer Award at PAKDD 2020, and selection as one of the Top 200 Global Young Researchers in Mathematics and Computer Science at the 9th Heidelberg Laureate Forum in 2022. She contributes as a senior/program committee member for conferences AAAI, IJCAI, WWW, WSDM, KDD, and general sessional chair for IJCNN, and supervises postgraduate students in graph analytics, graph representation, deep learning, and business/web intelligence.
