Elisabetta Cherchi is Professor of Civil and Urban Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi and Associated Faculty with the Civil and Urban Engineering Department at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering. Prior to joining NYU Abu Dhabi, she was Professor of Transport at Newcastle University in the UK from 2016 to 2024, Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark from 2010 to 2016, and Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari, Italy, from 2004 to 2010. She has also held positions as Adjunct Professor at the School of Economics and Management, Beijing Jiaotong University, China, from 2018 to 2024, and Contract Professor at the Department of Transport, Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, in 2010. Cherchi earned her PhD from the University of Cagliari, Italy.
Her research specializes in modeling transport consumers' behavior and decision processes, with particular emphasis on discrete choice analysis, data collection including immersive virtual reality environments, demand modeling, forecasting, and user benefit evaluation. Applications encompass mode choice for sustainable mobility and innovations such as electric and automated vehicles. As Principal Investigator of the Sustainable and Innovative Transport Demand (SIT-D) Lab at NYU Abu Dhabi, her work investigates the influence of habit leading to inertia and social conformity in transport choices. Cherchi's contributions are reflected in highly cited publications, including 'On the stability of preferences and attitudes before and after experiencing an electric vehicle' (Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment, 2013) and 'Battery electric vehicle adoption in Denmark and Sweden: Recent changes, related factors and policy implications' (Energy Policy, 2021). She served as Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice from 2018 to 2024 and is a member of its Distinguished Advisory Board, Past Associate Editor of Transportation from 2013 to 2018, and serves on several editorial boards. Cherchi chairs the Steering Committee of the European Association for Research in Transportation (hEART), was Past Chair of the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research (IATBR), and holds advisory roles at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies, University of Sydney Business School, and the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, Polytechnic University of Milan.
