Elio L. Arteaga: a true maestro of the visual arts applied to mass communications. Himself a blogger, he transmits to the students the passion for representing the media message in more ways than the written one. I took VIC3400 – Visual Design for Global Media on Fall of 2024, my very first semester in the Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communications bachelor at FIU, and it made me feel welcomed and appreciated, since such is the atmosphere Professor Elio creates for the teachings. His quizzes are in the form of Kahoot games, and playing you actually learn in a very fun way. He never, ever, ever forgets to leave a feedback comment, and when the semester ends you will discover that now the visual arts are easy and known to you, thanks to this great person in charge.
Elio L. Arteaga serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media within the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts at Florida International University, where he has been teaching since September 2005. He developed the fully online course VIC3400—Visual Design for Globalized Media in 2006, which was designated a Global Learning Elective in 2010, earned Quality Matters certification in 2015, and was redesigned for Canvas LMS in 2018. Arteaga received the Faculty Choice Award for Innovative Use of Open Content at the 2018 FIU Online Conference for his work on this course. In 2023, he was named Notable Global Learning Faculty, with an office located at AC2 320. His teaching emphasizes visual design, graphic design, and web design, contributing to students' digital literacy and creativity in a global context. He has also served as a faculty judge for FIU poster contests and participated in the FIU Online Conference.
Arteaga's academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Mass Communications from Florida International University in 1996, earned Magna Cum Laude with a 3.75 GPA, during which he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key National Honor Society, and FIU Honors Council. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Florida Atlantic University in 2003, with a perfect 4.00 GPA and a thesis exhibition titled 'Currency Design in the New Millennium.' Additionally, he completed an Associate of Science and Associate of Arts in Commercial Art and Advertising Design from Miami Dade Community College in 1987. From 2012 to 2018, he accrued 60 graduate credits toward a Ph.D. in Art Education, Curriculum & Instruction, concentrating in Language, Literacy, and Culture at FIU. He holds certifications from the Association of College & University Educators (ACUE) for Effective Online Teaching Practices, completed in 2022, and multiple Quality Matters (QM) certifications for online and blended teaching, earned between 2023 and 2024. Beyond FIU, Arteaga is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Web Design at Miami Dade College's School of Entertainment & Design Technology, promoted in 2024, where he received the 2024 Miami Dade College Alumni Association Endowed Teaching Chair and a District Award for 30 years of service. He has also taught as an adjunct at Broward College since 2023 and previously at DeVry University and earlier at Miami Dade College.
