About Elijah

Elijah Chudnoff is Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Miami. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2008 and joined the University of Miami that same fall semester. His research focuses primarily on topics at the intersection of theory of knowledge and philosophy of mind. Chudnoff has published papers on intuition, perception, rationality, consciousness, expertise, knowledge, and thinking. His work examines the nature of intuitive justification, phenomenal contrasts in cognitive phenomenology, perceptual learning, epistemic elitism, and the roles of seemings in justification.

Chudnoff is the author of three monographs: Intuition (Oxford University Press, 2013), which develops and defends a rationalist account of intuition as a basic source of justification; Cognitive Phenomenology (Routledge, 2015), which clarifies debates surrounding the existence and nature of cognitive phenomenology; and Forming Impressions: Expertise in Perception and Intuition (Oxford University Press, 2020), which proposes a novel framework for understanding expertise through perceptual and intuitive capacities. Key articles include "The Nature of Intuitive Justification" (Philosophical Studies, 2011), "Is Intuition Based on Understanding?" (Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, 2013), "Phenomenal Contrast Arguments for Cognitive Phenomenology" (Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, 2015), "Two Kinds of Cognitive Expertise" (Noûs, 2019), "In Search of Intuition" (Australasian Journal of Philosophy, 2019), and "The Epistemic Significance of Perceptual Learning" (Inquiry, 2018). His scholarship has received substantial recognition, with approximately 1,875 citations and an h-index of 22 on Google Scholar. Chudnoff's contributions advance contemporary discussions in epistemology and philosophy of mind.
