Dr Effiezal Abdul Wahab is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he holds the positions of Course Lead for Postgraduate Accounting and Seminar Series Coordinator for Accounting. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Auckland in 2008, a Master of Accountancy from Universiti Teknologi MARA in 2003, and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting in 1998. Earlier in his career, he served as a Lecturer in the School of Management at Universiti Sains Malaysia from February 2008 to March 2009.
Dr Abdul Wahab's research interests include political connections, auditor independence focusing on the role of non-audit fees, earnings quality, related party transactions, and analysts forecast accuracy and dispersion. He has published in journals such as Journal of International Accounting Research, Management and Organization Review, Meditari Accountancy Research, and Pacific Accounting Review. Key publications include "Political Patronage, Audit Quality, and the Properties of Analysts’ Forecasts" (2021), "Director Networks, Political Connections, and Earnings Quality in Malaysia" (2020), "Female leadership and earnings management in politically connected firms" (2025), "Overconfident male CEOs and corporate outcomes" (2025), "Do female chief financial officers and female directors affect real earnings management?" (2024), and "Military connections, corporate governance and corporate tax avoidance" (2024). He serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Banking and Finance, received the AFAANZ Outstanding Reviewers Award, and best paper awards at conferences. He supervises PhD theses on CEO expertise and firm outcomes, analyst coverage and earnings management, and delivers seminars such as "Crafting Strong Hypotheses: From Literature Review to Precise Formulation."
