Inspires a passion for knowledge and growth.
Edris Pouresmaeil is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University, Finland, where he leads the Renewable Energies for Power Systems research group. He obtained his doctoral degree in Engineering and Technology from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya on April 4, 2012, following his role as PhD Research Fellow at the Center of Technological Innovation in Static Converters and Drives (CITCEA) at UPC-BarcelonaTech in Barcelona, Spain. His distinguished career encompasses a Postdoctoral Researcher position at the University of Waterloo in Canada, Associate Professor in Energy Technology Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, Senior Researcher at Abengoa Research in Sevilla, Spain, and Senior Researcher at ESTIA Institute of Technology in Bidart, France. In April 2025, he delivered the Tenured Professors' Installation Talk titled 'Power electronics for renewable energy' at Aalto University.
Pouresmaeil's research focuses on power electronics for power systems, integration of renewable energy sources into power grids, microgrid control and operation, and hybrid energy storage systems using green hydrogen and batteries. The RE4PS group, under his leadership, develops advanced models, control methods, stability assessment tools, and optimization frameworks for converter-dominated and low-inertia power systems, contributing to carbon-neutral energy transitions and aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Affordable and Clean Energy and Climate Action. He has secured public project funding for initiatives including Unleashing the Potential of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems in Green Energy Empowerment (UltraGreen, 2025), ECO-H2 for efficient green hydrogen production (2024), Soft4PES software framework (2024), SolarX for PV integration (2019), and Optimizing Bidding Strategies for Wind Farm Owners (2019). A Senior Member of the IEEE, he serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Systems Journal, IEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society, IEEE Open Journal of Power Electronics, and IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution. He co-edited the book Industrial Applications of Power Electronics and has authored numerous publications, such as 'A Novel High Step-Up Nonisolated Quadratic Boost Converter for Integration of Photovoltaic and Fuel-Cell Systems Into Bipolar DC Microgrids' (2026), 'Energy Management of a Fuel Cell–Supercapacitor Hybrid System With Dedicated Charging Converter' (2026), 'Common Mode Voltage Elimination and Zero-Sequence Circulating Current Reduction of Parallel Back-to-Back Converters' (2026), and 'Dual-Input Dual-Output Split-Source Inverter With Low Input Current Ripple' (2026). His scholarship has amassed over 6,700 citations with an h-index of 42, underscoring his impact in advancing renewable energy technologies. Pouresmaeil supervises postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, MSc students, and has mentored numerous alumni.
