About Edmund

Professor Edmund Lau is a respiratory and sleep physician and Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He concurrently serves as Senior Staff Specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he co-directs the Pulmonary Hypertension Service. Lau graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Studies (BSc(Med)) and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with first class honours from the University of New South Wales between 1997 and 2002. He completed his PhD in pulmonary vascular medicine at the University of Sydney from 2010 to 2014 and holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). His academic career includes appointments in the Central Clinical School, with a focus on integrating clinical practice and research in respiratory medicine.

Lau's research specializations include pulmonary vascular disease, pulmonary hypertension, difficult-to-treat airways disease, interstitial lung disease, and lung cancer screening and nodule assessment. He has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications, demonstrating substantial impact in pulmonary circulation, advanced heart failure, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, and related areas. Key publications encompass 'Pulmonary Circulation in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiogenic Shock' (Circulation: Heart Failure, 2025), 'Lung transplantation for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension' (Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, 2025), 'Long-term mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and severe hypoxaemia' (Respirology, 2024), 'Pulmonary Hypertension by Catheterization Is More Accurately Predicted by Non-Invasively Derived Pulmonary Vascular Resistance Than Pulmonary Vascular Impedance' (JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, 2023), and 'β3 adrenergic agonism: A novel pathway which improves right ventricular function in pulmonary hypertension' (Physiological Reports, 2023).
