Dr. Doga Demirel is an Associate Professor and Associate Director in the School of Computer Science at the University of Oklahoma, positions he has held since 2024 and 2025, respectively. He also serves as Graduate Liaison since 2025 and is the Director of the Virtual Reality, Interactive Simulation, and Biomedical (VRISB) Lab, which he founded in 2019. Prior to joining the University of Oklahoma, Demirel was an Associate Professor and Assistant Chair in the Department of Computer Science at Florida Polytechnic University from 2023 to 2024, and an Assistant Professor there from 2019 to 2023. He earned his Ph.D. in Integrated Computing (Computer Science) from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2018, M.Sc. in Applied Computing (Computer Science) from the University of Central Arkansas in 2015, and B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2013.
Demirel's research focuses on the design, development, assessment, and utilization of real-time medical and interactive simulations using computer graphics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering, and human-computer interaction including haptics. He has authored over 60 publications in reputable international journals and conferences. Key publications include "Virtual Reality-Based Donning and Doffing Simulator" (IEEE VRW, 2024), "Unified Framework for real-time fluid simulation in Virtual Rotator Cuff Arthroscopic Skill Trainer (VIRCAST)" (IEEE BIBE, 2023), "Development of a Virtual Reality-based Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Simulator" (American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2023), "Skill Level Classification and Performance Evaluation for Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty" (Surgical Endoscopy, 2023), and "Scoring metrics for assessing skills in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair" (International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, 2022). His work has earned multiple awards, such as the IEEE VR XRIOS Best Paper Award (2024), IEEE BIBE Best Paper Award (2023), American College of Gastroenterology Presidential Poster Award and Best Abstract in Obesity category (2023), Florida Polytechnic University Award for Excellence in Research (2022), and IEOM Outstanding Service Award (2022). Demirel co-chaired the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Conference North America in 2022.
