About Dirk

Dirk Bergemann is the Douglass and Marion Campbell Professor of Economics at Yale University in the Business & Economics faculty. He holds secondary appointments as Professor of Computer Science in the School of Engineering and Professor of Finance in the School of Management. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994, an M.A. in Economics from the same institution in 1992, and a Vordiplom in Economics from J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt in 1989. Bergemann joined Yale University in 1995 as an Assistant Professor after serving as Assistant Professor at Princeton University from 1994 to 1995. He advanced to Associate Professor with tenure in 2001, Full Professor in 2003, and was appointed to the Douglass and Marion Campbell Chair in 2005. He served as Chair of the Department of Economics from 2013 to 2019. Bergemann has held visiting positions at MIT (1998-1999), Columbia University (2004-2005), University of Munich (2003-2004), and others. He is a staff member of the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics since 1996, Research Fellow at CEPR since 2006, and Research Fellow at CESifo since 2004. He is the Founding Director of the Center for Algorithms, Data, and Market Design at Yale University.

Bergemann's research focuses on game theory, contract theory, venture capital, market design, auctions, and information design. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, the Society for Economic Theory, and the European Economic Association. His honors include the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (1999-2001), multiple National Science Foundation research grants, Google Faculty Fellowship (2014-2015), Yale University Best Teacher Award (2002), Best Advisor Award (2008), and support from the Sloan Foundation, Knight Foundation, Omidyar Network, and Google. He served as Co-Editor of Econometrica (2014-2018), currently Co-Editor of American Economic Review: Insights, Member of the Executive Committee of the Econometric Society, and has been Associate Editor for numerous journals including American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, Journal of Economic Theory, and Review of Economic Studies. Key publications include "Screening with Persuasion" (Journal of Political Economy, 2026), "How Do Digital Advertising Auctions Impact Product Prices?" (Review of Economic Studies, 2025), "Data, Competition, and Digital Platforms" (American Economic Review, 2024), "The Design and Price of Information" (American Economic Review, 2018), "The Limits of Price Discrimination" (American Economic Review, 2015), and "Selling Cookies" (American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, 2015).
