Dr. Dion Tuckwell is a lecturer in communication design in the Department of Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Monash University. He holds a PhD from Monash University, where his doctoral research examined the intersection of design practice and learning, and a Master’s Degree from the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Prior to his appointment at Monash, Tuckwell worked as a communication designer in several multidisciplinary studios in Melbourne and served as a teacher in a variety of private and public educational settings. He coordinates units such as TDN3002 Design Strategy and Professional Practice and contributes to research labs including the Emerging Technologies Research Lab.
Tuckwell specializes in interdisciplinary practice research, developing practice-based collaborative design methods for complex social research and investigating how design intervenes in models of adult learning. His contributions include Australian Research Council projects like the Innovative Learning Environments and Teacher Change (ILETC) program, as well as sustainability initiatives such as Net Zero Precincts. In 2025, he received the Australian Good Design Award in the Social Impact category for 'Making Space: Empowering Teacher Practice,' co-developed with Dr. Fiona Young in partnership with Evelyn Scott P–10 School; this project also earned the Australian A4LE Award for Innovative New Initiatives and the international Kelly Tanner Award. Key publications include 'Design cards as visual interventions: visualising and visioning net zero futures' (2025, Visual Studies, with E. Quilty et al.), 'Actualising the affordances of innovative learning environments through co-creating practice change with teachers' (2022, The Australian Educational Researcher, with F. Young and B. Cleveland), 'Net Zero Precincts: Stage 2: Agenda-setting' (2024, report with D. Sharp et al.), 'Design and Futures Anthropologies for Transitions: Reframing the Journey to Net Zero' (2026, book chapter with S. Pink et al.), and 'Making sense of design thinking' (2019, conference proceedings). Tuckwell's work advances participatory design, design pedagogy, and interdisciplinary approaches to education and sustainability.
