Dinty W. Moore is Professor Emeritus in the English Department at Ohio University, with a focus in Literature and creative nonfiction. He holds an M.F.A. from Louisiana State University. Moore joined the Ohio University faculty in 2007 and became director of creative writing in the English Department the following year. He retired in May 2020, having taught graduate and undergraduate courses including creative nonfiction workshops, form and theory of nonfiction, history of the essay, and literary editing and publishing. During his tenure, Moore published five books and two co-edited collections, contributing significantly to the field of creative nonfiction.
Moore's essays and stories have appeared in distinguished publications such as The Southern Review, The Georgia Review, Harper’s, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine, Gettysburg Review, Utne Reader, and Crazyhorse. He serves as editor of Brevity: A Journal of Concise Literary Nonfiction. Key publications include his memoir Between Panic & Desire, winner of the 2009 Grub Street Nonfiction Book Prize; The Story Cure: A Book Doctor's Pain-Free Guide to Finishing Your Book (2017); and Flash Nonfiction Funny: 71 Very Humorous, Very True Stories, co-edited with Tom Hazuka (2018). Other notable books are The Mindful Writer, The Accidental Buddhist, The Emperor’s Virtual Clothes, Crafting the Personal Essay: A Guide for Writing and Publishing Creative Nonfiction, and The Rose Metal Press Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction. Moore's mentorship has left an undeniable impact on students, with many former students publishing books and crediting his guidance in writing, publishing, and securing academic positions.
