Dieter Wolke is Professor of Developmental Psychology and Individual Differences at the University of Warwick's Department of Psychology and Division of Mental Health & Wellbeing in Warwick Medical School, positions held since 2006. Qualified with a PhD, Dr. rer. nat. h.c. (multiple honorary doctorates), Dipl-Psych, C. Psychol, and AFBPsS, his career commenced as Research Assistant at the University of London's Institute of Education (1983-1984) and King's College Hospital London (1984-1985), followed by Research Fellow and Honorary Lecturer at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (1985-1990). In 1990, he was appointed Director of Psychology for the Bavarian Longitudinal Study at Dr. von Haunersches Kinderspital, University of Munich, a role he maintains. He subsequently served as Professor of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire (1995), Professor in Lifespan Psychology and Deputy Director of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) at the University of Bristol Medical School (2002), and Scientific Director of the Jacobs Foundation in Zurich (2004-2006) while holding visiting professorships at Bristol and Zurich universities.
Professor Wolke's research specializations include developmental pathways leading to developmental psychopathology, social and emotional development in biologically at-risk children such as those born very preterm, school and sibling bullying, and infant regulatory problems involving crying, sleeping, and feeding, in relation to parenting. He is Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on major longitudinal studies including EPICure, RECAP Preterm, and the Bayerische Entwicklungsstudie. His key publications encompass "Neurologic and Developmental Disability at Six Years of Age after Extremely Preterm Birth" (Marlow et al., 2005), "Adult psychiatric outcomes of bullying and being bullied by peers in childhood and adolescence" (Copeland et al., 2013), "Long-term effects of bullying" (Wolke & Lereya, 2015), "Impact of bullying in childhood on adult health, wealth, crime, and social outcomes" (Wolke et al., 2013), and "Parenting behavior and the risk of becoming a victim and a bully/victim: A meta-analysis study" (Lereya et al., 2013). Wolke has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Cross-Field Researcher for 2023, marking his sixth consecutive year in the top 1% globally, and holds multiple honorary doctorates including from the University of Helsinki.
