About Dewaram A.

Dr. Dewaram A. Nagdeve is the Director and Senior Professor (Additional Charge) in the Department of Fertility and Social Demography at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai. His academic qualifications include a Ph.D. in Population Studies from IIPS in 1999, a Master of Population Studies (M.P.S.) from IIPS in 1994, an M.Sc. in Agriculture from Punjabrao Krishi Vidyapeeth in 1991, and a B.Sc. in Horticulture from the same institution in 1989. He qualified the UGC National Eligibility Test in Population Studies in 1995.

Throughout his career at IIPS, which began as a Lecturer in May 1999, he has advanced through positions including Senior Lecturer (2005-2007), Associate Professor (2008-2012), and Professor and Head of the Fertility Studies Department since January 2012. He has also served as Acting Head on multiple occasions and currently holds additional administrative roles such as Chairperson of the Employees Grievances Cell since September 2020 and Central Public Information Officer since February 2018. Nagdeve's research specializations encompass fertility and family planning differentials among various social, caste, and religious groups in India; linkages between population, poverty, development, and environment; maternal and child health care including urban-rural disparities; contraceptive use dynamics among urban poor; and fertility trends and patterns at district and state levels in states like Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal. With over 74 research papers published in refereed journals and conference proceedings, 25 technical and data reports, and 7 invited talks, his work has contributed significantly to understanding demographic dynamics in India. Select publications include "Family Planning Differentials by Religion in India" (2023) co-authored with Prashant Bhimrao Dongardive, "Fertility Differentials in India by Religious Groups" (2021), "Population Growth and Its Effect on Environment in India" (2021), "Fertility and Family Planning Differentials among Social Groups in India" (2021), "Fertility Trends and Pattern in Maharashtra (A District Level Analysis, 1971-2018)" (2020), and the book "Food Security and Health Status: A Comparative Study of Tribal and Non-Tribal Households" (2018).
