About Denis

Denis Grégoire is a Professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at HEC Montréal, holder of the Rogers-J.A. Bombardier Chair of Entrepreneurship. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration, specializing in Strategy and Entrepreneurship, from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2005, a Master of Science in Management from HEC Montréal in 1997, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from McGill University in 1992. Before joining HEC Montréal in 2014, he held faculty positions at Georgia State University and Syracuse University in the United States for nearly a decade. Grégoire's research focuses on the cognitive processes that support entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy, particularly the identification of entrepreneurial opportunities, decisions to pursue international expansion, and the contributions of angel investors to high-potential ventures.

He has published in premier outlets including Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Journal of Business Venturing. Key publications include 'Compelling Empirics in Quantitative Studies' (Academy of Management Journal, 2025, with Tröster, Kotha, Zhu, Farh, Roberson, and Gruber), 'Artificial Intelligence and Entrepreneurship: A Call for Research to Prospect and Establish the Scholarly AI Frontiers' (Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, 2025, with Obschonka, Nikolaev, Ooms, Levesque, Pollack, and Behrend), 'Mobilizing New Sources of Data: Opportunities and Recommendations' (Academy of Management Journal, 2024, with Ter Wal, Little, Bermiss, Kotha, and Gruber), 'Applying Coleman’s Boat in Management Research: Opportunities and Challenges in Bridging Macro and Micro Theory' (Academy of Management Journal, 2022, with Cowen, Rink, Cuypers, and Weller), and 'Venture Idea Assessment (VIA): Development of a Needed Concept, Measure, and Research Agenda' (Journal of Business Venturing, 2021, with Davidsson and Lex). He co-authored the book 'Survivre à son projet de recherche: introduction à la méthodologie en gestion' (Les Éditions JFD, 2023). Grégoire has earned the Heizer Doctoral Dissertation Award in New Enterprise Development (2006) and the IDEA Thought Leader Prize (2011) from the Academy of Management's Entrepreneurship Division. He serves as Associate Editor of Academy of Management Journal, sits on editorial boards for Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and was Representative-at-large for the Academy of Management’s Entrepreneurship Division (2020-2022). Additionally, he is Associate Director of Creative Destruction Lab-Montreal and former Academic Director of NEXT AI-Montreal (2018-2023).
