Deborah Bunker

Deborah Bunker is a Professor Emeritus of Systems and Information at the University of Sydney Business School, affiliated with the Discipline of Business Information Systems. She earned her BA and MCom (Honours) from the University of New South Wales and her PhD from the University of Wollongong. Throughout her distinguished career at the University of Sydney, she advanced from senior lecturer to professor in Business Information Systems, contributing to key research groups such as the Interoperability for Extreme Events Research Group and the Communications and Technology for Society Research Group. Professor Bunker served as President of the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems and held leadership positions in information systems associations. Her most recent institutional role included Chief Science Officer at Natural Hazards Research Australia, formerly the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC.

Professor Bunker's research specializations encompass systems and information management, with a focus on organizational collaboration and change management in complex crisis environments, social media analytics, crisis informatics, and digital transformation. Her scholarship has significantly influenced the field, evidenced by over 5,500 citations on Google Scholar. Key publications include 'Who do you trust? The digital destruction of shared situational awareness and the COVID-19 infodemic' published in the International Journal of Information Management in 2020, 'Circuits of Power: A Study of Mandated Compliance to an Information Systems Security De Jure Standard in a Government Organization' in MIS Quarterly in 2010, and contributions to disaster management literature such as studies on social media during Hurricane Harvey and the Munich shooting. She is a Distinguished Editorial Advisory Board Member of the International Journal of Information Management and has delivered keynote addresses at conferences including the Disaster & Emergency Management Conference and ISCRAM Asia Pacific. Professor Bunker has supervised doctoral research on topics including social media utilization in emergency management and agile software development.
