Professor Debmalya Sanyal serves as Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia, a position he has held since June 2020. He is concurrently Professor in the Department of Endocrinology at KPC Medical College, Kolkata, India, since February 2016, having progressed from Associate Professor (February 2013 to January 2016) and Assistant Professor (December 2010 to January 2013) in the same department. His academic journey includes an MBBS with Honours from Calcutta University in 1998, a Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine (DTM&H) from Calcutta University, MD in General Medicine from Utkal University in 2004, and DM in Endocrinology from West Bengal University of Health Sciences in 2007. He further earned Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) in 2010, the Specialty Certificate in Endocrinology & Diabetes from the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom, and Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) in 2015. Sanyal maintains active clinical roles as Senior Visiting Consultant Endocrinologist at NH-RTIICS since August 2007 and Visiting Consultant Endocrinologist at GD Hospital and Diabetes Institute since February 2009. He contributes as faculty to the Integrated Diabetes & Endocrine Certificate Course jointly offered by the University of Newcastle and KPC Medical College since 2017.
Debmalya Sanyal's research specializations encompass various aspects of diabetes, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes, post-transplant diabetes mellitus, diabetes in chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy, insulin use in renal impairment, and diabetes in pregnancy. His work also covers thyroid diseases, endocrine hypertension such as primary hyperaldosteronism, gender identity disorders, and epidemiological and genetic studies related to diabetes and renal transplantation. With over 84 publications in national and international journals, key contributions include 'Different Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors: Can They Prevent Death?' in Endocrine Practice (2022), 'Addition of SGLT2 inhibitors in type 2 diabetes is associated with persistent and significant weight loss' in Clinical Diabetology (2022), 'Quantifying Remission Probability in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus' in Clinical Practice (2021), and 'Efficacy and safety of insulin degludec in renal transplant recipients with pre-existing diabetes' in Endocrine and Metabolic Science (2021). Sanyal has received the Etzwiler International Scholar award (2019), IMA Dr Deepak Banerjee Awards for best papers in the Journal of the Indian Medical Association (2009 and 2019), and an International Travel Grant for AACE presentation (2015). He serves as Secretary of the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) West Bengal Chapter since 2022, is on the executive committee of the Endocrine Society of Bengal, and was part of the Scientific Committee for the Endocrine Society of India Conference in 2012. He regularly presents at international conferences such as ENDO and AACE in the USA, and national events like RSSDI and ESICON in India.
