About Debbiesiu

Debbiesiu L. Lee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Psychological Studies in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Miami, where she joined the faculty in August 2006. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University in 2005. As a core faculty member in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program, Lee's research focuses on counseling psychology within multicultural contexts. Her work examines how individuals, particularly racial and ethnic minorities and LGBT individuals, cope with discrimination and its subsequent impacts on mental health, physical health, educational outcomes, and employment. She explores critical areas such as racial and ethnic identity development, sexual orientation and gender identity development, multicultural competence development and training, and advocates for nontraditional methodologies in multicultural research. Lee's expertise in cross-cultural psychology, cultural diversity, ethnicity, and social exclusion further informs her contributions to understanding health disparities and identity-related issues.

Lee's publications demonstrate substantial influence in the field, with over 2,000 citations documented on Google Scholar. Key works include meta-analyses such as "Racial Discrimination and Asian Mental Health: A Meta-Analysis" published in The Counseling Psychologist in 2011, and "Discrimination Against Latina/os: A Meta-Analysis of Individual-Level Resources and Outcomes" in the same journal in 2012. She co-authored "Over a Half-Century Encapsulated: A Multicultural Content Analysis of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1954–2009." More recent research addresses health-related social needs, including "Educational, Financial, Logistical, Emotional, and Social Needs Among Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma" in 2025, "Providers’ Perspectives of Hepatitis Delta Virus Screening and Recommendations for Improvement: A Qualitative Investigation" in 2025, and "A Qualitative Study Identifying the Navigation Needs of Patients with HCC" in 2024. Lee has received funding from the American Psychological Association for projects reducing mental health disparities through cultural competence training. Her involvement in University of Miami initiatives, such as Project Data Inclusion addressing anti-bias in the data life cycle, underscores her impact on inclusive research practices and training in psychology.
