David Jeffrey is Professor Emeritus of English at James Madison University, specializing in contemporary Southern literature and eighteenth-century British literature. He earned his B.A. from Hobart College, M.A. from the University of Virginia, and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Throughout his career, Jeffrey demonstrated a commitment to scholarship and academic leadership within the humanities.
Jeffrey served as Head of the English Department at James Madison University and later as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters until his retirement at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year. In his administrative role, he presented the reorganization plan for the College of Arts and Letters to the Board of Visitors in 2010 and named new department chairs, including for the Department of Philosophy and Religion in 2013. His scholarly record includes serving as editor or contributing editor of three books, authoring approximately 50 critical articles, 30 book and film reviews, and one poem. He delivered over 30 scholarly presentations at annual meetings, including those of the Modern Language Association. Additionally, he held editorial positions as associate editor of The Southern Humanities Review for five years and co-editor for seven years. Jeffrey's contributions supported undergraduate research journals and other academic initiatives at JMU.
