About David

David Card is the Class of 1950 Professor Emeritus of Economics in the Business & Economics faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of the Center for Labor Economics and the Econometrics Laboratory. He earned a B.A. from Queen's University in 1978 and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1983. Early in his career, he served as Assistant Professor of Business Economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business from 1982 to 1983 and as Assistant Professor and subsequently Professor of Economics at Princeton University from 1983 to 1997. He has held visiting appointments at Columbia University, Harvard University, UCLA, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. From 2012 to 2017, Card directed the Labor Studies Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research in labor economics encompasses wage determination, education, inequality, immigration, unemployment, gender and race differences, welfare reform, minimum wages, strikes, collective bargaining, pension incentives, retirement, labor supply, and evaluation of social programs.

Card has authored and co-authored numerous influential works, including the book Myth and Measurement: The New Economics of the Minimum Wage (1995, with Alan B. Krueger), Handbook of Labor Economics (volumes 3 and 4, co-edited with Orley Ashenfelter), and over 100 journal articles and book chapters. His empirical contributions have reshaped understanding of labor market effects of minimum wages, immigration, and education. Major awards include the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2021), John Bates Clark Prize (1995), BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2015), IZA Prize in Labor Economics (2006), Frisch Medal (2007), Jacob Mincer Award (2019), and Fellowships in the National Academy of Sciences (2021), American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1998), Econometric Society (1992), and Society of Labor Economics (2004). He has served as Co-editor of the American Economic Review (2002-2005) and Econometrica (1993-1997), President of the American Economic Association (2021), and on various editorial boards.
