About David

David Allen, MD, is a tenured Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, specializing in pediatric endocrinology within the field of Medicine. He holds a BA from Stanford University and an MD from Duke University School of Medicine. His training includes pediatric internship, residency, and chief residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at Duke University Hospital, and a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Joining the faculty in 1988, he has served as Division Chief and Fellowship Director for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. Previously, he directed the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Pediatric Residency Program for 14 years, chaired the Wisconsin Endocrine Newborn Screening Committee for 24 years, and was a member of the American Board of Pediatrics sub-board for Pediatric Endocrinology for five years. Nationally, he was elected director and president of the Pediatric Endocrine Society; internationally, he chaired the organizing committee for the International Meeting of Pediatric Endocrinology (IMPE) and presided over its 10th meeting.

Dr. Allen's academic interests include childhood adipose organ development and dysfunction, enhancing fitness and insulin sensitivity to prevent diabetes in children, improving newborn screening programs for endocrine disorders, and assessing systemic effects of inhaled corticosteroids. He has authored more than 250 articles, letters, monographs, and book chapters and edited four textbooks. Representative publications include "Human GH Use By Athletes With Short Stature Without GH Deficiency: Therapeutic Use Exemptions" (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2025), "Child Health Needs and the Pediatric Endocrinology Workforce: 2020-2040" (Pediatrics, 2024), and "A Multidisciplinary Approach to Pediatric Obesity Shows Improvement Postintervention" (Academic Pediatrics, 2023). His excellence in education, clinical care, and leadership is recognized by awards such as the ACGME Parker Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award, University of Wisconsin Presidential Physician Leadership Award, Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association Career Citation Award, University of Wisconsin Clinical Educator Award, and the 2025 Judson J. Van Wyk Prize. Dr. Allen has contributed to editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and served as associate editor for the International Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology.
