Daniel Zhao, PhD, conducted research in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His work focused on investigating sex-based differential expression of 17β-HSD13 in Hepatitis C virus-infected liver, exploring implications for hepatocellular carcinoma. This study highlighted differences in gene expression between males and females in HCV-positive liver samples compared to controls. The research was presented as an abstract at the 14th Annual OSU-CHS Research Week in 2023. Daniel Zhao collaborated with Rashmi Kaul, PhD, Professor of Immunology in the same department, and undergraduate student Carldon Deniega. The abstract notes that 17β-HSD13, a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase enzyme involved in lipid metabolism, exhibits sex-specific patterns that may contribute to disease progression and outcomes in liver cancer associated with chronic HCV infection.
