Dana Goldman is a University Professor of Public Policy, Pharmacy, and Economics at the University of Southern California and holds the Leonard D. Schaeffer Chair in the Business & Economics domain through his leadership in health economics. He serves as Founding Director of the USC Schaeffer Institute for Public Policy & Government Service and has directed the Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics since its inception, ranking it among the world's top health economics organizations. Goldman earned a BA summa cum laude from Cornell University and a PhD in Economics from Stanford University. He was Dean of the USC Price School of Public Policy from 2020 to 2024, currently advises the USC Provost, held the Distinguished Chair in Health Economics at RAND directing its health economics program, and co-founded Precision Health Economics and EntityRisk.
Goldman's research in economics, health, statistics, and public policy features over 350 articles with more than 24,000 citations. Key publications include 'Prescription drug cost sharing: associations with medication and medical utilization and spending and health' (JAMA, 2007), 'Differences in life expectancy due to race and educational differences are widening, and many may not catch up' (Health Affairs, 2012), 'Pharmacy benefits and the use of drugs by the chronically ill' (JAMA, 2004), 'Participation of patients 65 years of age or older in cancer clinical trials' (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2003), and 'Substantial health and economic returns from delayed aging may warrant a new focus for medical research' (Health Affairs, 2013). He pioneered a Netflix-style model for prescription drug access and showed benefits of lower copayments for the chronically ill. Securing over $200 million in funding including from NIH, he advised the Congressional Budget Office, California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Covered California, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Institute, GRAIL, Edwards Lifesciences, and Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company. Elected to the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Social Insurance, and National Academy of Public Administration, awards include USC Associates Award, Alice Hersh Emerging Leader Award, MetLife Silver Scholar Award, NIHCM Research Award, Robert Biller Outstanding Faculty Award, and USC Mellon Mentoring Award. He founded and led USC's NIH-funded Center for Minority Aging Research for eight years, mentoring faculty at Stanford, Harvard, and others. In 2024, USC named him University Professor for policy leadership and collaboration.
