Dr Christine Canty is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago's Wellington campus, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Division. She is recognized as an exceptional addition to the teaching team for the Postgraduate Diploma in Neuropsychology (PGDipNeuropsych), marking New Zealand's first postgraduate training programme dedicated to neuropsychology. Launched in 2024 and led by Dr Paul Skirrow, this part-time, two-year programme delivers remote teaching to registered psychologists, equipping them with the competencies required for specialist endorsement in neuropsychology and full registration with the New Zealand Psychologists Board. The inaugural year saw an enrolment of 21 students, demonstrating strong interest and the pressing need for specialized professionals in clinical neuropsychology across New Zealand's health system.
As an Australian-trained clinical neuropsychologist, Dr Canty offers extensive hands-on experience gained from a wide array of hospital and community settings. Since establishing herself in New Zealand in 2020, she has contributed to inpatient rehabilitation services and community-based programmes funded by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Based in Dunedin, she provides remote contributions to the PGDipNeuropsych programme alongside colleagues such as Dr Alexia Pavlis, another Senior Professional Practice Fellow based in Melbourne. In addition, Dr Canty co-teaches PSYC404: Assessment in Clinical Psychology Practice, a paper focused on clinical skills for postgraduate students in clinical psychology. Her role facilitates the translation of practical clinical expertise into educational content, supporting the growth of neuropsychology practice within psychological medicine at the University of Otago.
