Inspires students to reach new heights.
Christina Watson-Mills serves as Warden/Tautiaki at Caroline Freeman College within the University of Otago's Campus and Collegiate Life Services. She assumed this role in 2025, following a long tenure as Warden/Tautiaki at Toroa College, where she led the residential community from at least 2018 through 2024. Her career in residential colleges emphasizes building supportive, inclusive environments that promote academic success, cultural engagement, and personal growth among students. Under her leadership at Toroa College, the community excelled in inter-college competitions, securing third place overall in the 2018 Cultural Competition, first in visual arts, and multiple podium finishes in gaming, literary, film, and sports events such as the 48 Hour Film Competition, pool, debating, and rugby sevens. Toroa retained the Chef of the Year title in 2018, with Watson-Mills praising the catering team's dedication. She oversaw Toroa College's 25th anniversary celebrations in 2021, including a special dinner with university leaders, the unveiling of Pasifika carvings by artist Ana Teolo Ana, and resilient management during COVID-19 lockdowns, where residents demonstrated grit and adaptability while maintaining close relationships through communication and limited gatherings.
Throughout her tenure, Watson-Mills implemented initiatives like 'Do the Mahi Get the Treats' to reward studying with treats such as donuts, pizza, and candy floss nights, alongside vibrant events including welcome weeks with paintball, laser tag, toga nights, talent shows, casino-themed balls, fireside chats with motivational speakers, beach clean-ups, and volunteering. At Caroline Freeman College, she marked the college's 25th anniversary, introduced an academic support programme with subject-specific reviews and guidance sessions, fostered high participation in co-curricular activities like Māori and Pasifika performance groups, and supported community efforts such as Relay for Life. As a member of the Queer Friendly Staff Network, she contributes to inclusive student support. Her leadership has consistently nurtured strong team spirit, fair play, and memorable experiences for residents.
